In this Bachelor's Thesis I am focusing on the Great Depression of 1930s. This Bachelor's Thesis is mainly focused on the crisis in the United States of America, where the crisis was the deepest. The first part describes the successful economic period after the First World War, the so-called Golden Age that preceded the crisis. The second part focuses on the situation in the stock market during the Great Crash and the subsequent effort to solve the crisis by former President, Republican Herbert Hoover. The third chapter deals with the period of Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in particular his plan New Deal and the Second World War.

Great Depression and its causes from the perspective of economic theories

The Great Depression was the greatest economic downturn in 20th century. In my work I describe a period before the crisis, and the collapse of the American Stock Exchange, which is often wrongly considered as the beginning of crisis. Main economical theories saw different reasons of crisis. Keynesians saw the biggest problem in the lack of aggregate demand and the solutions they saw in government stimulation of demand. Austrian school with this theory completely disagreed and saw just the biggest mistake of the government interventions that deepened the crisis. Monetarists saw the biggest problem in the failure of the Federal Reserve, which failed at the time of distress, when it should get adequate amount of money to banks. Saw a possible solution in reducing the interest rate and Federal reserve should purchase government bonds held by commercial banks. The United States got out of the crisis thanks to government spending during the World War II.

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na příčiny a vznik deprese ve 30. letech 20. století v USA. V práci je nejdříve rozebrán společenský, politický a hospodářský vývoj ve 20. letech. Dále je v práci rozebráno,jaký mělo na Velkou depresi vliv založení Federálního rezervního systému roku 1913 a následný boom dvacátých let.V práci je objasněno, proč deprese trvala tak dlouho a názory na její příčiny z pohledů významných ekonomů.
